What Are Vector Databases?

Unlike traditional databases (which store structured data like text or numbers), vector databases store high-dimensional data representations (vectors). These vectors allow for similarity searches—essentially finding patterns or context rather than exact matches.

For example: Instead of searching for “red shoes,” a vector database can find items similar to an image of red sneakers—even if the term “red shoes” isn’t explicitly mentioned.

What’s the difference?

Traditional databases - excel at exact queries (e.g., “sales in Q1”)

Vector databases - ideal for semantic searches (e.g., “find products like this image”).

Vector databases are essential for AI-driven applications because they find patterns and similarities in complex data.

They enable personalized recommendations by analyzing user preferences, detect fraud by spotting unusual transaction patterns, and improve chatbots by helping them understand customer queries more accurately.

This makes them a crucial tool for businesses integrating AI into their operations.

Shopify vs Custom E-commerce

One of the most common questions we get is whether building a custom e-commerce site is better for launching a new side hustle or helping brick-and-mortar shops move online. Our answer is almost always the same: Shopify is the way to go.

Shopify covers 99% of eCommerce needs, offering an affordable and user-friendly platform with plans starting at 39€/month.

When to Consider a Custom E-commerce Solution

While Shopify works for most businesses, there are cases where a custom solution might be worth considering:

  • Unique Business Models: If you need advanced features like subscription boxes or complex product configurators.

  • High Scalability Needs: For enterprise-level traffic or custom integrations with other systems.

  • Brand Differentiation: When you want complete control over design and functionality to create a truly unique shopping experience.

  • Tailored Integrations: If your business relies on specific tools like CRMs, ERPs, or proprietary software, a custom e-commerce solution ensures seamless integration across your systems.

  • Enhanced User Experience: With a custom platform, you can design every aspect of the user journey.

  • Long-Term Cost Efficiency: While the upfront cost is higher, custom solutions eliminate recurring platform fees and unnecessary features, making them more cost-effective in the long run.

Not sure which option is right for your business? We can help you decide—whether it’s setting up Shopify or building a custom platform tailored to your needs. Let’s talk!

Quote of the Week

The function of good software is to make the complex appear to be simple

Grady Booch

Think about the tools you use every day in your business.

The best ones are effortless—they just work, making complicated tasks feel straightforward.

That’s the magic of good software.

It’s not about removing complexity entirely, but it’s about organizing that complexity in a way that feels easy to handle.
